The classics
The Luxembourg Gardens are the family garden par excellence, in the heart of the 6th. The Tuileries Garden runs between the Louvre and Place de la Concorde, with its alleys and basins. The Champ-de-Mars offers a big lawn facing the Eiffel Tower.
To run and climb
Buttes-Chaumont (19th) is hilly, with slopes, bridges and a lake: best for children who walk well. Parc de la Villette (19th) combines big lawns, play areas and the Cité des sciences next door.
The Bois de Vincennes (12th) is the largest green space in eastern Paris, with the zoological park and lakes; the Parc floral is a garden inside the wood.
Quieter, away from the crowds
Parc Georges-Brassens (15th), Parc Clichy-Batignolles (17th), Jardin Tino-Rossi (5th, by the Seine) and the Île aux Cygnes (15th) are less crowded, ideal for a picnic or a child to run free.
To connect children with nature in the city, the Maison Paris Nature (12th) runs activities around gardening and biodiversity.
Practical tips
Opening hours vary by season and some gardens close at dusk: check before you go. Bring water and shade in summer, as some parks are very exposed.
