The free gems truly worth the visit

Nice is one of the rare large French cities where municipal museums are free for everyone, with no conditions attached. The Masséna Museum for the city's history, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MAMAC) with its large colourful installations, the Museum of Asian Arts in its zen lakeside setting — all welcome children and adults for free.

Parc Phoenix, another free gem in Nice, houses a large tropical greenhouse and a small urban zoo (flamingos, parrots, giant tortoises) with no entry fee. The Promenade du Paillon, right in the heart of Nice, combines interactive fountains in summer, shaded playgrounds and green spaces — all free and accessible by tram.

Beaches and water activities

Nice's beaches are public and accessible to all. The Promenade des Anglais runs alongside several pebble beaches equipped with lifeguards, showers and toilets. With young children, the eastern beaches (around the port and the Castel area) are less crowded and often calmer.

For older children, beach clubs offer paddleboard, dinghy sailing and kayak lessons from age 7–8. In summer, several operators set up inflatable structures in the sea accessible from the beaches — children love them; parents watch from the shore.

Creative workshops and classes: an exceptional offering

Nice has a particularly rich offering of creative workshops and classes for children. Pottery, painting, jewellery, sculpture, cookery classes, photography — creative studios are plentiful in the Vieux-Nice, around Place Garibaldi and near the Libération market.

MAMAC regularly runs children's workshops on Wednesdays: a rare chance to create inside a contemporary art museum, guided by cultural educators. Palais Lascaris offers accessible workshops on Baroque history from age 6. These municipal workshops are often free or very low-cost.

Planning a family day in Nice

Nice is easy to explore on foot or by tram. The Lignes d'Azur network covers the whole city; the day ticket is ideal for families. The Old Town, with its colourful lanes, morning markets (Cours Saleya) and artisan ice cream, is a natural circuit for children who like to wander.

On very hot days (common June to September), alternate shaded spaces and indoor activities. Early morning in museums or workshops, midday in the shade of the Paillon, afternoon at the beach or in an indoor park. In the evening, the Promenade des Anglais and Castle Hill offer spectacular views and a welcome breeze.
